Downtown Hideaway
In the heart of Kennett Square, space is at a premium. The challenge was to fit entertaining, dining, relaxation, and privacy into a compact downtown backyard without making it feel crowded. GreenRoots approached the property as a collection of outdoor rooms, giving each its own purpose while maintaining an easy flow from one space to the next.
A fire pit gathering area with a concealed outdoor television creates a flexible place for family and friends. Nearby, a pergola shades the dining area by day while café lights carry gatherings into the evening. More private spaces were tucked into the landscape for the spa and a quiet retreat, giving the homeowners places to step away without ever leaving the backyard.

The Experience
This backyard is designed to change with the moment. Gather around the fire to watch a game, move beneath the pergola for dinner, or settle into the spa away from the activity. Each space feels distinct, but none feels isolated from the rest of the landscape.
In the quieter corner of the property, the sound of moving water softens the noise of downtown Kennett Square and creates a retreat within the retreat. Privacy, shade, lighting, and carefully defined gathering spaces make the small footprint feel considerably larger than it is. The result is a backyard that can be social when the homeowners want it to be and secluded when they don't.

A small backyard doesn't have to do less. It just has to make every space count.
