Autumn Fireside Retreat
The clients wanted a patio that feels like a natural extension of their Wilmington home, not a slab added to the yard. GreenRoots designed an outdoor room with defined areas for dining, relaxing, and gathering, intimate enough for quiet evenings and easy for entertaining.
Privacy and enclosure shaped the plan from the start. Custom screening gives the space boundaries and separation while keeping the patio visually connected to the landscape around it.

The Project Brief
- A patio that reads as an extension of the home
- Defined zones for fireside lounging and outdoor dining
- Custom screening for privacy and a true sense of enclosure
- A generous seating area gathered around a steel fire bowl
- Planting with seasonal interest that makes the space feel established

The Experience
At the heart of the retreat, deep seating wraps a steel fire bowl, a place to settle in as the evening cools. Just beyond, the dining area makes outdoor meals easy, set apart from the lounge without feeling separate from it. A low stone wall defines the edge of the patio, and custom cedar lattice screening frames the space, giving it privacy and a sense of enclosure while letting light and landscape pass through.
Thoughtful planting softens the architecture. Multi-stem trees and ornamental grasses move with the seasons, and landscape lighting brings out their texture after dark, so the patio feels settled into its surroundings rather than laid on top of them.
The design is made for the whole year, with autumn as its best moment. Cooler temperatures, surrounding foliage, and the warmth of the fire make this patio especially inviting when the leaves turn.

Best when the leaves turn.
