Whimsical Woodland Retreat
The design intent for this Lincoln University property was a whimsical garden retreat that feels tucked into the landscape for generations, where architecture, planting, and natural materials come together with charm, discovery, and a sense of escape. A timber-frame outdoor room addition anchors the space, with a stone base, X-braced screens, and a gabled cedar shake roof that extends the home’s living experience into the surrounding woodland.
From the timber frame, the design unfolds up a run of wide granite steps to a stone fire pit terrace, creating a series of outdoor destinations that feel connected yet distinct.

The Project Brief
- A garden retreat that feels as if it has grown into the woods over generations
- A timber-frame outdoor room with a stone base, extending the home into the garden
- Granite steps and a flagstone fire pit terrace as a second destination
- Boulders, irregular stepping stones, and layered plantings with a storybook quality
- Winding pathways that lead from one discovery to the next

The Experience
There is no single dramatic focal point here. The magic comes from layers of detail discovered along the way. Irregular stone stepping stones wander through the planting beds toward the timber-frame room, where a stone knee wall, X-braced screens, and a pair of screen doors invite you in. Large natural boulders sit among the plantings as if they had always been there, and a run of broad granite steps rises between two of them toward the fire.
Planting carries the experience. Ferns, astilbe, hardy geraniums, heuchera, and daylilies soften the stone and timber, while a laceleaf maple lights up the corner by the fire terrace. Small garden details add to the sense of discovery: glass finials, a rusted bell flower sculpture, a trellis obelisk, and a cherub tucked along the wall. Landscape lighting picks out the steps and paths after dark.
At the top of the steps, a flagstone terrace gathers gray Adirondack chairs around a steel fire bowl, with the woods closing in behind. The result is a charming retreat that feels both timeless and unexpected, where the timber frame, the fire, and the garden around them come together in an experience that feels almost fairy-tale-like.

Timeless, unexpected, and a little bit magic.
