A Deck with a View

This rolling Kennett Square property already had the view. What it lacked was a way to truly enjoy it. GreenRoots transformed the underutilized backyard into a series of connected outdoor spaces that work with the natural grade rather than fighting it. An elevated deck, lower lounge, and flagstone fire pit patio create distinct destinations across the property, each positioned to take advantage of the surrounding landscape.

The Project Brief

  • Work with the property's existing grade and rolling terrain

  • Create multiple connected levels for outdoor living

The Experience

The backyard unfolds naturally from the house, moving from the elevated deck down into a series of spaces for dining, lounging, and gathering around the fire. Each level offers a different way to experience the property while maintaining a visual connection to the surrounding tree line. Lush plantings frame the spaces without closing them in, creating privacy while preserving the views that made the site special in the first place.

What was once difficult terrain now gives the backyard its character. The changes in elevation create movement and separation without disconnecting one space from the next. Whether it's an everyday dinner outside, a quiet evening by the fire, or a larger gathering around the outdoor kitchen, the landscape gives the family room to use their property in ways that weren't possible before.

The landscape didn't need to be flattened. It needed to be given a purpose.
